Saudi Arabia’s new linear megacity, The LINE, is one of the most ambitious construction projects in history. Foundations for phase one are nearly complete and the first vertical structures are soon to emerge from a 170-kilometre trench cut into the Saudi Desert.
But over the past year, every breathtaking announcement of progress has been accompanied by a steady stream of increasingly bad news: mass layoffs, a strategic review, and reports of a budget spiralling into trillions of dollars. Bishoftu International is set to serve 60 million passengers a year, with capacity rising to 110 million passengers once all phases are built.
