Ciudad Real International was supposed to be a masterstroke of strategic planning. Designed as an overflow airport for Madrid's Barajas International, it closed just four years after opening and was sold for just 0.001 percent of its construction cost. Bird protection zones, lack of infrastructure and sheer bad luck all combined to make this one of Spain's most disastrous infrastructure projects of all time.
The firm will now develop its concept with the Memorial Committee before a final design is announced in April 2026.
Designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, the 74-metre Emaar Properties Station will open in 2029 and form part of the Emirate’s new metro Blue Line.
Construction works have officially completed at the country’s first major new airport in more than 50 years. The focus now shifts to fit out and preparing the airport for its 2026 opening.
