Stansted Airport to Undergo £600M Transformation

LONDON Stansted, the third busiest airport serving the British capital, is to undergo a £600 million transformation that will see the addition of a new arrivals terminal.

The capacity of the current airport terminal, designed by British architecture practice Foster + Partners and completed in 1991, is 23 million passengers per year.

In 2018, the airport welcomed 28 million travellers.

Set to be built adjacent to the existing facilities, the new arrivals building designed by Pascall + Watson will relieve some of the pressures facing the airport by incorporating baggage reclaim, customs and border control facilities.

Construction on the 39,000 square metre extension will start this spring and is expected to complete by autumn 2020.

The contract to build the £150 million new facility has been awarded to Mace.

The nature of the new building's design, as well as its site - which is currently an empty lot - will help enable speedy delivery.

A number of innovative systems, including cooling and heat recovery, high performance glazing and shading louvers and a centralised MEP plant will help the building achieve a minimum BREEAM rating of Very Good.

The new arrivals terminal will also allow for renovation and reconfiguration of the existing building into a departures terminal with more space for check-in, hospitality and retail.

At the end of the transformation programme, Stansted will be the only airport in the UK to have separate terminals for departures and arrivals.
