62 Tonne Beam Installed at Battersea Power Station

WORKS at London's Battersea Power Station site reached a major milestone last month when construction workers installed a 62 tonne beam that spans the building.

The 27 metre-long, 2.6 metre deep beam will hold up seven storeys and transfer a load of 2,070 tonnes, leaving a column-free retail and events space below.

It was transported to the site on a lorry and lifted into place by one of the largest cranes in Europe, which has been erected at Battersea specifically for this purpose.

Once finished in 2020, the project will include 253 luxury apartments ranging from studios to family penthouses, a 2,000-capacity concert venue and the aforementioned retail space.

Apple is set to be the anchor tenant of the complex's office space and will move 1,400 of its staff here in 2021.

By this time, the project will be connected to London’s underground network with the completion of the Northern Line extension.
