FINALISTS 2021

Rural Studio

These Architecture Students Are Building Real Affordable Homes

Architecture students in Alabama are designing and building real affordable homes, and then giving them away to those in the community who need them the most. Rural Studio, part of Auburn University’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Architecture, has been running an off-campus programme for architecture students to design and build community projects and affordable homes for their rural neighbours.

Kenya Brick

This Woman Recycles Plastic Waste Into Bricks That Are Stronger Than Concrete

Nairobi-based Nzambi Matee used her skills as an engineer to create a machine that recycles plastic waste into bricks that are stronger than concrete.

Her company, Gjenge Makers, makes on average more than 1,500 affordable plastic bricks every day and has created 112 job opportunities for garbage collectors, women and youth groups.

Judging Criteria

Community Connection and Impact

We're interested in projects that address an underserved or unmet need; working on an issue, or with a community that has not received sufficient attention, support, or resources, for example.

This could mean working on a project that is very specific, such as providing access to clean water in a certain geographic area or community. It could be working on the latest robotics or digital technologies to drive the AEC industry forward. It could mean creating an LGBT+ space where there was none before, or using innovative materials to build sustainable housing. It might even be collaborating and communicating with other people in the AEC sector, to enact change.

You should be able to demonstrate a strong connection to your community that is helping you define a problem and develop a solution. Impact can also be defined in several ways: either by how deeply a small group of people may be affected or how many people across a broad spectrum could benefit from your project (including the potential to scale your innovation).

The judges are all passionate about the industry and want to be inspired by your story!

Feasibility

The project or solution must be viable with proven traction - this needs to be real and at the very least have some strong early results.

It could be in its initial stages, part-way through or completed. If in the prototype or pilot stage, we'll want to see evidence that you have begun to test your idea and that it’s grounded in reality. We want to see that your work can result in a tangible benefit for a particular group or community. To demonstrate the feasibility of your project, you should describe the groundwork already done, note whom you are working with to implement the project, and show that you have the right combination of skills among your team to make the project possible.
